What flowers are in season for my autumn wedding?

If you are planning an autumn wedding and looking for wedding flower inspiration, I am excited to share with you the most beautiful, seasonal blooms that will be in season on your big day. Autumn is a month full of natural texture and interest, coming in the form of rich sumptuous berries, bronzed foliage, dried elements alongside the main event stunning flowers of course.

Autumn is a wonderful time of year to get married, the light hits differently and nature is full of abundant interesting bounty. It is a time to embrace a more richer, muted colour palette with bronze, gold, burgundy and chocolate tones being a popular choice. If you are erring on the side of opting for more neutral tones, don’t despair this look still works perfectly for Autumn. However, I would suggest including just a touch of a dark element, whether that comes in the form of foliage or a few choice blooms such as chocolate cosmos or deep dahlias. This will certainly bring your neutral, pretty wedding colour palette right up into the autumnal season.

how to create the perfect autumn bridal bouquet:

Your bridal bouquet will be one of the most important accessories on your wedding day, it should compliment and not overshadow your dress, so I always ask my clients to tell me about their dress and if possible show me a photo. Of course this will be a well kept secret! This will help me as a wedding florist to establish what size and style bouquet will accompany your dress. Often my clients are drawn to the timeless, natural, flower filled style bridal bouquets, which ooze class and elegance. You can see from the bouquets below I kept to a neutral colour palette of blush, ivory and mocha to complement the various dusky pink and mauve shade dresses. However, the real pop of colour comes from the chocolate cosmos, completely elevating the bridal bouquet to stand firmly in it’s correct season of autumn.

The roses are important in bringing the blousy romantic nature to the bouquets, the O Hara has an exquisite scent, alongside the porcelain style tone of the ‘Quicksand’ this really is an unbeatable combination. Accompanied by locally grown cosmos, scabious and dried grasses, these flowers bring texture, movement and interest to the bouquets. One of my favourite foliage to use in autumn are snowberries, a wonderful berried stem flower in white and blush, they are completely different to the traditional red berries that are traditionally synonymous with autumn.

How to dress your wedding ceremony for an autumn wedding?

It is not uncommon for autumn to have better weather than the summer months, with couples opting for the later months in the year to be married because they provide more reliability and certainty weather wise. Quite often couples are determined to get married inside, but if the weather plays ball on the day, then an outdoor ceremony is a bonus. This is completely the opposite to the summer months, where couples are rightly desperate to be married outside! Whether you’re set on an indoor wedding or not, any installations we provide will be versatile in the fact they can be created inside or outside. Autumnal flower arches can be the perfect way to dress your wedding ceremony using big trailing branches and textural berry stems, large headed chrysanthemum blooms and stunning dahlias. Think about the key areas in your wedding venue that will be used throughout the day and therefore, deserve to be covered in flowers! These stairs are not only in the lobby of the venue, meaning guests will be passing through all day, they are the main staircase to which the couple will walk down on the way to their ceremony. Do not miss that key photo opportunity to be surrounded by seasonal wedding flowers on your big day!

Why use interesting foliage in your autumn wedding flowers?

Autumn is all about the foliage for me, when the leaves start turning colour from lush summer green to the faded yellow, to rich bronze and golden tones, it is time to replicate this look of nature in your wedding flowers. Being seasonal in your wedding design is key at all times, so look at what your environment is doing in these autumnal months and gain inspiration from here. From the rose hips and old man’s beard you begin to see in the hedgerows, through to the golden beech turning on the majestic trees. It is crucial to bring these elements into your wedding flower design to ensure your wedding is reflective of that moment in time. Autumn is a great time of year to go to town on your floral installations, like this staircase above, or think about where you can create a full, foliage archway full of autumn foliage. The flowers can almost take a backseat in these installations, with the branches of autumn foliage, berry stems and textural grasses leading centre stage.

Pyschocarpus is a favourite foliage of mine, a deep rich plum tone it is perfect for complimenting either a rich, sumptuous colour palette or to add depth to a more neutral, muted colour palette. It is a great shrub in the garden too, providing rich colour throughout the season, I have a couple in my garden and they are perfect for just nipping out to snip the finishing touches to a bridal bouquet.

What Flowers work well for Autumn Table Decorations?

As you can see these low ceramic bowls full of autumn blooms are a perfect way to dress a round table, just the right size to provide a full display for guests to enjoy, without being too overwhelming and crowding the space. We always have to be mindful about what else will be included on the table, think wine, water, candles so we always advise to think about covering a 30cm diameter size dinner plate in the centre of the table. The toffee roses are an absolute knockout bloom for autumn, there really is no flower that has that beautiful rich, yet muted mocha brown tone… it is perfection in my floral eyes! Each vase is slightly different ensuring that the wedding is completely unique, yet the overall look is cohesive and complimentary.
