How to use ‘butter yellow’ in your wedding flowers

It is this season’s hottest colour seen everywhere on the catwalk through to home interiors, therefore it is inevitable that this soft yellow shade will become a firm trend in the wedding industry. I’m going to talk you through how you can use ‘Butter Yellow’ in your wedding flowers, to create an unforgettable romantic and elegant look.

When it comes to wedding flowers, I try to avoid trends and concentrate on giving my clients more timeless and elegant designs, it is crucial that your wedding flowers last the test of time and when you look back in the future there are no regrets. However, sometimes a trend works so perfectly within florals that it becomes hard to pass by. Butter Yellow is everywhere right now, this soft pale yellow is a beautiful colour for spring and summer and translates into wedding flowers in the most stunning way. As a wedding florist, I want to share with you the the varieties of flowers that work well in this soft yellow palette, alongside how you can style your wedding in this tone.

My top SPRING flower varieties to use in Butter Yellow:

I work seasonally, always suggesting the absolute best flowers to use for your wedding date. Butter Yellow is not a colour I would use all year round, it is most definitely a spring or summer vibe. You could add this soft yellow amongst chocolate, burnt orange and copper tones for the Autumn, which would definitely work. However, I am going to concentrate on the earlier part of this year for this blog post. Spring gives you primroses, which is the perfect tone for this colour, yellow, scented narcissi, pale yellow hyacinths, as well as tulips. All these flowers are synonymous to spring and would be the perfect addition to any spring wedding.

My top summer flower varieties to use in Butter Yellow:

As we move through the seasons and head into summer, again this is a season that lends itself wonderfully to embracing soft yellow. Ranunculus will still be available in the early months up until around May, then we move onto peonies, like these ‘Lemon Chiffon’ variety, which are absolutely exquisite. Use them on their own for minimalist statement or add in with other country garden inspired blooms to create a fuller look. Stocks come in the most rich cream colour, and not only bring scent to the wedding flowers, but also texture in the form of their soft, elongated shape bloom. These are perfect for taller, statement vases or meadow style arrangements. Garden roses come into their own from around late May/ June (weather depending!) You will find lots of beautiful roses in butter yellow, so keep these stunning flowers for your bridal bouquets, carrying a heavenly scented garden rose as you walk down the aisle, all truly add to this magical experience. Trailing rose branches work fabulously in natural archways or floral pillars, think texture and movement and what varieties of flowers will offer this.

Using soft yellow flowers in wedding table arrangements:

There are lots of things to consider when planning your wedding flower table arrangements. Firstly will you be having round or long tables? Different arrangements suit different table styles. What is your venue like? Are you having a laid back country garden marquee at home, or are you having a more formal wedding in a country estate? What existing colours are in your wedding reception space already? Is it a neutral space where you can go to town, or are their clashing colours that you may need to consider? This tablescape was created in the beautiful grounds of Euridge, so we had a fairly blank canvas of the natural backdrop of the beautiful gardens, meaning we could really embrace the butter yellow and go wild!

Low, overflowing bowls of elegantly arranged florals graced the centre of the table, full of lots of locally grown flowers such as poppies, ranunculus, orlaya sweetpeas. I also added in some gorgeous import roses and butterfly ranunculus. The bowls were interspersed with modern arrangements of low bowls with flower frogs. This contained lots of zingy green viburnum and blousy lemon peonies. The combination of using two types of arrangement meant that we had a really full, luxurious look for the dinner. The linen was a vibrant moss green, which complimented the butter yellow florals perfectly, however this look would also work with a more neutral, paler linen such as ivory or a more underrated, but absolutely beautiful alternative for wedding linen: oatmeal.

what other colours work with butter yellow?

Butter Yellow is a colour that works brilliantly on masse, by adding in other touches of ivory, cream and pops of brighter yellow, you can achieve a stunning colour palette that will be elegant, romantic, timeless and of course seasonal. However, if you would rather use soft yellow as an accent colour, then there are lots of alternative colour combinations that would work. Any pastel shade would work, so pale dusky blue in the form of delphiniums, or blush pink garden roses, lilac sweet peas or more mocha and neutral tones. If you are looking for spring or summer mixed pastel tones for your wedding flowers, then do not over look this colour. It will bring a new level of softness and lightness to your wedding flowers, so you can use this on trend colour, but in a more subtle way.
