September is the perfect month to use dahlias, a seasonal late summer flower which literally comes in all shapes and sizes! It’s one of my favourites due to its versatility and the fact that they can fit into all types of arrangements and bouquets in all colour themes. Last week at The Rose Shed I used my fair share of these beauties so wanted to show a few examples of the dahlia looking its best amongst wedding flowers. It was one of those weeks where I was constantly smiling at the amount of prettiness in my workshop… take a look you will see what I mean!
Hetta and Michael were married at Coombe Lodge, in Blagdon and choose soft peach, ivory and blush tones for their wedding flowers. Hetta wanted to focus on the use of lots of interesting foliage yet use a few chosen blooms to bring in colour so I used peach amaryllis, peach lisianthus and ivory dahlias. This ivory star shaped dahlia is a classic and I tend to use this within the pastel weddings as the ivory tones are perfect for this.
Hetta wanted heaps of texture within her bouquets so this was great for me to use lots of different foliage including eucalyptus, olive, senecio, brunia, succulents and eucalyptus pods. Her bridesmaids carried similar hand tied bouquets as hers all with trailing, flowing soft ribbon… so romantic!
On the tables I used low glass vases filled with a simple, yet effective hand tied of amaryllis, dahlias, frilly lisianthus and all of the foliage. It was brilliant working with Hetta and her fabulous ideas regarding her wedding flowers and I was so thrilled with the overall look on the day!
Harriet and Sam were married in Clifton and were working towards a loose theme of mint, coral and grey as their colour theme. Harriet was very laid back and asked me to use mixed, seasonal flowers that would work with these colours so I opted for coral, pale pink and yellow. I chose a variety of different dahlias some spiky, some more pom pom as the focal flowers and sat these alongside Miss Piggy coral roses, peach hypericum and peach lisianthus.
To add texture I used craspedia which are fun yellow balls that sit within the flowers adding pops of colour, blue thistles, dill, daisies, poppy seed heads, with pale grey eucalyptus, mint and senecio foliage.
Harriet wanted the boys to have mixed buttonholes so I used dahlias, roses, spray roses, lisi, craspedia and thistles all in little tied rustic buttonholes finished off with twine. Don’t they look fab!?
Finally I have some home grown dahlia inspiration! I visited my Mum over the weekend and helped myself to a bunch from her cutting patch which still has some zinnias growing strong and lots of brightly coloured dahlias… I may have also snuck around the garden and snipped a few Japanese anemones and sweet peas, so thanks Mum! Hooray for the dahlia I’ll say!!
