Spring Wedding flower trends - what is blooming this season

Spring weddings can be some of the most beautiful and you are completely spoilt for choice when it comes to the variety of spring blooms in season. I want to share with you my very favourite seasonal flowers to use in your spring wedding and how you can truly embrace this wonderful season in your big day!

Spring officially begins on the equinox, however for these purposes I am taking about weddings from March, April and May! The flowers available at the end of May will be completely different to those at the beginning of March so if you have a particular flower in mind that you’d love to use, consider this when choosing your wedding date!

What flowers are in season in spring?

At the beginning of spring the bulbs will be popping up, think narcissi, muscari, fritillary, daffodils, crocus, there are so many delicate and dainty flowers that emerge at the beginning of British flower season. Moving on through to April the tulips are beginning to show more, a blousier bigger headed bloom they work so well with the previous blooms and come in a wide range of colours. Ranunculus and anemone are now readily available, these beauties will be the stars of the show in your wedding bouquets! By the time we get to May we have so many amazing seasonal flowers in bloom, viburnum, foxgloves, alliums, peonies, aqualegia, alongside a lot more foliage and filler to play with too.

What flowers work well in Spring bridal bouquets?

Spring bridal bouquets are full of texture, interest and movement due to the fact that so many spring blooms are delicate and dainty in nature. We begin the season with smaller blooms, meaning you can work such a. variety of material into your bridal bouquets. Blousy statement blooms like ranunculus or anemone will look fabulous against their smaller counterparts such as muscari, narcissi and fritillary. I love picking out fresh snippets of blossom, flowering currant or ginista to sit amongst the blooms adding delicate texture. Colour is super important in a spring wedding, soft, romantic pastel tones work brilliantly so the primrose yellow, the soft dusky blues, the blush and lilac tones… all work so well together or equally alone with ivory. You can definitely add in elements of depth to your spring wedding colour palette, for example the snakes head fritillary are one of the most stunning spring glowers you can use. A deep plum, hanging bell headed flower they will add the most dainty texture to your bridal boquet. They may not be as well known as say tulips or ranunculus but that is the beauty of using a great wedding florist, especially one that uses seasonal flowers. You will be exposed to a wider variety of interesting and potentially underrated yet all be it exquisite seasonal blooms!

How to make Spring Buttonholes:

One of my favourite things to make as a wedding florist, are spring buttonholes! As I mentioned before the dainty and delicate nature of spring blooms, mean they lend themselves perfectly to wiring and using in buttonholes. In my opinion adding in a pop of pale dusky blue in the form of muscari, can really work with most colour pallets, after all it is springtime when we see pops of blue appearing in nature… just think bluebells in the woodland or forget me nots dotted about the side of the road. Ranunculus also work well in spring buttonholes, a more sturdy flower they tend to be the focal flower with other spring fronds such as ginista being used to add texture. Finish off with some beautiful silk ribbon and your spring buttonhole will be complete!

Using Spring foliage in Weddings:

If you are wondering what seasonal foliage is available for your spring wedding then you will be in luck to use beauties such as blossom, viburnum, ginista, magnolia, ribes. All of which are fleeting making them an even more special addition to your wedding. I have great big viburnum opulus shrubs in my garden and look forward to them flowering each year, a soft zingy spring foliage they work so well with any colour palette and bring that true spring green to your wedding flowers. Blossom such as apple or pear will be absolutely gorgeous in large scale arch or ceremony arrangements and be completely in keeping with nature in spring at that time.

Creating impact with spring flowers at your wedding ceremony:

Spring weather can be just as beautiful as the summer, with many couples anticipating holding an outdoor wedding ceremony. In this case large scale flower arches are super popular, working both inside and outside they are a flexible way to cover all bases when it comes to dressing your wedding ceremony. Overflowing natural vases also work well, use them in various heights to create a laidback, but stylish look or more symmetrically with more traditional urn style arrangements. Either way, by having some statement ceremony floral pieces you will ensure that you create an unforgettable look and feel to your wedding ceremony.

How to create spring tablescape at your wedding:

As you can see from this wedding set up, long banquet tables were adorned with low overflowing bowls and interspersed with ceramic votives. Long tables are a popular and stylish way to dress your wedding breakfast and I love the addition of the patterned linen here! Ceramic bowls are a great way to encorporate lots of spring blooms to your tables, equally clear glass vases work well too. Here I used a mixture of ranunculus, butterfly ranunculus, fritillaries, tulips and spring foliage to create a luxurious yet laid back and stylish look to the tables. Guests will be completely emerged ins spring blooms and admiring not only their beauty, but also their scent too creating an unforgettable dining experience. As a wedding florist I always try to encourage couples to think about the look and feel of the whole table, so by adding in smaller clusters of ceramic votives you add varying heights of flowers to the tables, add lots of texture and interest and allow the tables to look full and luxurious, without being stuffy or formal.

A wedding florists’ top 5 spring flowers:

Ok so I am asking the impossible question here, but if I were to pick my favourite spring flowers to use (fickle florist alert this will change weekly, quite possible daily during the actual season!)

  • Ranunculus: the most romantic, ruffled, and delicately coloured spring flower you can use. The larger cloni varieties can emulate the size of a garden rose or peony so are the ultimate spring showstopper!

  • Tulips: are an absolute must for any spring wedding, whether you go with the taller fancy more ornate varieties like belle époque or black hero for your statement blooms, the exquisite fluffy parrot tulips, or the fun two toned colourful shapes. You must definitely have this spring bloom on your wedding flower wishlist.

  • Viburnum: The colour, the shape, the texture is just synonymous with spring for me… soft zingy green the swathing branches bring the most incredible movement to large scale installations.

  • Frittalry: I have mentioned them throughout this blog post for a reason. Stylish, deep in colour, yet delicate in nature fritillary will be a seasonal touch to your bridal bouquets and tables capes.

  • Narcissi: can be known as fancy daffs with so many stunning varieties available now, I adore the two tones ruffly peach and ivory varieties, alongside the multi headed smaller varieties, they bring a soft spring scent to any wedding arrangement. Easy to grow too, they come back year on year with minimal intervention, what is not to love?!
