How to choose the perfect seasonal flowers for your autumn wedding at Pynes House
If you are getting married in Autumn, then congratulations! You have chosen one of the most beautiful times of the year to be wed, one that is full of so many stunning, seasonal autumn flowers that will really add beauty and elegance to your special day.
I want to share with you some autumnal wedding flower inspiration at the beautiful Pynes House exclusive wedding venue in the heart of Devon. The colour palette is rich toffee, muted browns with hints of deep red to complement. This modern autumn colour way is one that will remain timeless, yet look fresh and interesting also. Thank you to Laura Rosemary Photography for these stunning photos.
Best flowers for Autumn Bouquets:
Autumn bridal bouquets lend themselves to incorporating lots of texture and rich interest, from the vast amount of berry varieties in season to the interesting textural foliage, rest assured your bouquet is going to truly unique and unforgettable. Here I have used ‘Quicksand’ and ‘Symbol’ roses, both Ecuadorian they have an unmistakably large headed bloom which adds true elegance and opulence to any bouquet. The colours here are muted, yet warm, which is crucial for an autumn wedding. The ‘Quicksand’ is a porcelain coloured delicate colour, with the symbol bringing that toned down toffee look, which you can really only get from a rose. I have complimented these with garden roses ‘Roald Dahl’ picked from my garden, in November… yes we have had a mild autumn! The blousy nature of the garden roses adds yet more texture, and works so well alongside the more traditional roses.
Foliage in key in autumn bridal bouquets as this will bring the texture. As a wedding florist skimmia is one of my favourite foliages to use within autumn and winter, the deep red delicate blooms are so dainty that they bring the deep burgundy colour, yet in a soft way. Sometimes deeper colours can look blobby or blocky, but the skimmia adds depth in the prettiest way! Jasmine is a great foliage for this time of year, it trails and offers such movement to a bouquet, it really is quite special. I added chocolate cosmos too for that rich deep chocolate tone, deep chocolate brown has been very much in fashion this year so I really expect and hope to see more of this tone used within wedding flowers. Fun fact… did you also know chocolate cosmos smell of… yes chocolate! So not only are the beautiful they also smell super sweet too. Dried grasses are another great way of adding interest to your bridal bouquets, they are very much in season in October/November so do utilise these interesting textures.
How to create a statement with flowers at your autumn wedding:
Autumn weddings are the perfect time to use statement foliage to create installations throughout your wedding day. If you are looking for a beautiful floral arch to say ‘I Do’ under or a sweeping staircase full of seasonal blooms, then autumn branches work wonders here. Pynes House is famous for its stunning feature mantlepieces which, in my florist opinion, deserve to be flowered with only the finest blooms! The antique gold mirror is the perfect backdrop to these complimentary autumn tones, making the flowers ‘pop’ even more. I used beech branches to create the structure, alongside dried bracken and oak leaves. Adding in the beautiful roses and these statement chrysanthemum blooms ‘Copper Vienna’ I could wax lyrical about how chrysanthemums are the ultimate autumn flower, with so many stunning varieties being developed for weddings. Copper Vienna has a delicate copper tone, as the name suggests, with large headed unfurling petals that create the most romantic, yet natural look to any autumn installation. Deep burgundy hydrangeas are unbeatable at this time of year, adding a luxurious level to the arrangements. I finished off the mantelpiece arrangement with trailing rose hips, bringing that pop of red, and much needed nod to autumn in the form of the red berries.
What table decorations should I have at my autumn wedding?
This very much depends on whether you are opting for long tables at your wedding, or round tables. At Pynes House, you can have both options, so this will be determined by your guest numbers and your overall preference. As the mantelpieces were dressed with stunning blooms, this added atmosphere to the edge of the room, so opting for low arrangements on the tables works fine. I would recommend having a mix of tall and low florals in venues where you needed to add interest to the ceiling, such as a marquee or a plainer venue. However, Pynes House is beautiful throughout with so many period features, the flowers are always an accessory to this. Low ceramic bowls are a great way of dressing round tables, not only do they allow guests to talk and see each other, the flowers can be enjoyed throughout the dinner as they are so visible. Scent is important here too, so guests can really be immersed in the wedding table decorations.
A second great option is something like this, where bud vases are used in various heights to create a cluster of flowers in the centre. I focused on using statement blousy red roses here en masse to create a bold, more modern look, but using a mixture of blooms in a country garden style works wonderfully too.
Candlelight is crucial to adding atmosphere to your autumn wedding:
Candlelight is an absolute must to your tablescapes during your autumn wedding, the light levels are lower and of course it gets darker earlier, so please do indulge in beautiful taper candles for your dinner. The ambience this creates is unbeatable and the soft glow light the candles bring is super romantic! Think about where else you can add candlelight throughout your wedding, do ask your venue on what they allow as most venues will stipulate that candle light must be covered, so storm lantern and glass covers will be your best option here.
